Why peanut free?
Bird seed (except for ours!) is pretty much guaranteed to contain peanuts or traces of peanuts or be processed in a facility that uses peanuts (most likely all three). This makes it unsafe for people with peanut allergies or peanut free environments like schools to feed the birds. We wanted to change that.

Bird seed is pretty much guaranteed to contain or may contain peanuts. Not ours! Our seeds are certified peanut free.
-
Most bird seed contains tree nuts or traces of tree nuts. Our blends don't contain any of the tree nuts.
(please see our allergen statement in our FAQ below)
-
We only use premium, naturally non-GMO seeds that backyard birds truly love. We never use fillers (which are often GMO).

Premium seeds
We don't just make peanut free birdseed, we make really, really great birdseed.
We only use premium seeds that backyard birds truly love. No fillers. No additives. No GMO. And, no peanuts (or tree nuts)!
No fillers!
Did you know that many blends of wild birdseed contain up to 70% (or more!) of (cheap) fillers? Birds aren't fond of these, and neither are we. This is why our blends cost a bit more, we think it's worth it (so do the birds).
Backyard safe
If your backyard is enjoyed by someone with a peanut allergy, using birdseed that contains peanuts or traces of peanuts (which it all pretty much does, except for ours!) can make your backyard unsafe for them.
School safe
Our seeds and blends are certified peanut free and are safe for peanut free environments like schools, daycares, Montessoris and public spaces.
Let customers speak for us
from 133 reviewsThis seed is loved by the birds here in Upstate New York! It seems to attract a wider variety of birds than many other mixes as well. There is a peanut allergy in the family, so this is a welcome addition indeed. It's nice to see that this market is being addressed. The birds say "Thank you" as well.
Great product as advertised.
Always grateful that a product was made for people with peanut allergies! My birds love it and we all can enjoy the birds without the worry of bird seed with peanuts. Thank you!!
House finches have been coming every day! And they love it and I am safe from peanuts! Thank you for making these!
This seed is great and we don't have to worry about our son, who has peanut and tree nut allergies, coming into contact with it in our yard. Carie is the best and from here on, we'll only be buying directly from Wallis Johns.
We and all the neighbourhood birdies LOVE this seed.
Cardinals, Blue Jays, Finches, Chickadees, Sparrows... they devour it!
Equally great is the fact it's a Canadian-made product with minimal plastic packaging. It's a win-win-win!
I searched everywhere for birdseed NOT in a plastic bag, until I found company. Not only is the bag composable, but the order arrived the next day. Great service and a great product. Oh and the birds love it, too.😊
I do not dislike any of this product, the birds absolutely love this stuff, I bought a bag of this to see how the birds would react, the nuthatches really like it, I have had more of them here than I have ever had.Koodos to the company who supplies this .I will be ordering more.
I really enjoy the different species of small birds that these seeds attract and that there is no waste… the birds love it & is good to feed year round!
expensive, but the birds love it and safe for our home, a great product! Excellent customer service if you have reached out to them!
It attracts ALOT of birds, small and big!! My cats have never been that happy seeing all kind of friends through the windows. The birds seem to love it too, since I need to fill the Bird feeder every week!!!
I am very happy with this bird seed. You get a fair amount in the bag and the fact it's a Canadian company is always a bonus in my opinion. The Black Oil Sunflower seeds are a favourite in my feeders. The local birds love it and devour it. I use a squirrel proof feeder which helps to ensure the seeds go to their intended recipients. If you enjoy feeding and watching your local birds, this seed will keep them happy.
I love this birdseed.Yes it is on the expensive side like everything else right now. However this is the bird seed my dayhome used for crafts because I was a peanut free dayhome. My own son and one other had peanut allergies. Despite my dayhome being closed I still only use this brand for my home because of the allergy.

Can I feed my pet bird your outdoor bird seed?
No. We don't recommend feeding pet birds our outdoor bird seed. Our outdoor blends have a higher fat content, which is great for outdoor birds, but not so great for indoor pet birds.
Is your packaging environmentally friendly?
Yes.
Our packaging journey is always evolving, with birds and the planet in mind.
Packaging, especially environmentally friendly packaging, is a very nuanced endeavour.
Our packaging up until now has always been a combination of home and industrially (BPI certified) compostable material. And we (and our customers) have loved this option.
Home compostable is fantastic - but not everyone has a compost pile at home. Industrial composting is fantastic - but not everyone has access to those services (yet).
So, after continuing conversations with people way smarter than us and who are dedicated to and passionate about sustainable packaging, we’ve decided to switch things up and move to a more circular form of sustainability in the form of PCR (Post Consumer Recycled) packaging, meaning packaging made using recycled plastic waste collected from consumers, such as bottles and containers. It can then go on to be recycled into other items like textiles and decking material. This keeps things included in a circularity of use, and out of landfills.
It’s also PFAS free. PFAS are those nasty forever chemicals. We really didn’t want to contribute to more of those.
We’ll continue to do our part to make sure that our packaging is as kind as it can be to the environment that the birds (and we) need and love.
Is your birdseed non GMO?
Yes.
Our birdseed blends are naturally non-GMO. The ingredients we use do not have GMO varieties, which means the blends are non-GMO by nature and by design.
Do you use filler seeds?
No.
Did you know that many blends of wild bird seed can contain up to 70% (or more!) of filler seeds? They can. But not ours.
Filler seeds, like corn, wheat, milo (sorghum) and red millet, are seeds that backyard birds either aren't that fond of or don't eat. They make it seem like you're getting quite a bit of bird seed for not a lot of money but most of these seeds (and your money) just goes to waste. And, the seeds that are tossed to the ground (because the birds don’t like them), can get moldy, which can be very harmful to birds. If all that wasn’t reason enough to avoid filler seeds, these unwanted by the birds seeds can attract rodents, who are more than happy to enjoy them.
We decided very early on that we wanted nothing to do with fillers, even if it meant our blends would cost a bit more (and they do). We truly believe it's worth it, for the humans and the birds.
A re-cap about filler seeds
- Backyard birds aren't all that fond of them.
- Birds toss them to the ground, which can cause mold and attract rodents.
- Your money, along with the filler seeds, just goes to waste.
- You're not attracting near the amount of birds you could be with quality seeds birds actually love.
(To be fair, there are birds that will eat these filler seeds, but they’re largely either ‘nuisance’ birds that you really don’t want at your feeders, like European Starlings and House Sparrows (both of which are considered invasive species in North America) or birds that don’t frequent backyard feeders such as quail, pheasants and turkeys.)
What seeds attract the most birds?
Life can be complicated enough, especially when you’re navigating it with a peanut (or any) allergy, and so we wanted to keep things simple and create just one blend (ok, two) that offered Something for Everyone. Inclusive. Simple.
Our blends contain only premium seeds that all the backyard seed-eating birds truly love (no fillers, ever). These are black oil sunflower seeds, sunflower chips, safflower seeds and white proso millet. Some birds love one of these over the other, but there’s something for everyone.
If you were wanting to use only ONE kind of seed, instead of a blend, then black oil sunflower seeds are the ones to use. (we donate 25% of net proceeds from every bag sold of our black oil sunflower seeds to charities supporting the people of Ukraine. Did you know that sunflower seeds are Ukraine’s national flower? They are. We wanted to do something to help and this seemed a fitting way.)
You could also use only sunflower chips (which just means that the outer shell has already been removed). This is a great option if you’re not keen on the sunflower shells gathering under your feeders (they can be great for your garden) or your feeder is on a patio or balcony where discarded shells might be a bit unsightly or inconvenient.
